Tips For Planting and Growing Fruit Trees
If you want to plant a new fruit tree, you have to regard some important factors. First you need to decide what kind of tree you want and where to plant it. Be careful when diving home from the nursery with the new tree in the back of your car. Young trees are very delicate and need to be treated carefully. Avoid any situations dangerous for your new friend.
As soon as you safely arrive at your home, you can start with the preparation. First you need to examine the clump of roots, because the hole you have to dig should be bigger and deeper in size than the roots. This sounds like a lot of work, but it is important to get all of the soil back to the hole. You do not want to have a heap of useless dirt in your yard! In a second step you need to put some compost or fertilizer in the whole, so that your tree will grow well. After these steps you can put the fruit tree into the hole spreading its roots out evenly. Only then the tree will be stable and strong.
When the tree is set in the hole you need to put the soil back into the hole and fill it up to the edge. The soil can be a little higher than the rest of your yard, it will be compressed when watered. It is important that the tree is vertical and stable, only then you should firm up the soil in a gentle way.
In case the tree is not stable and can be bent, take a rope and tie the trunk to stake. The rope should not be tied too tightly, because the tree needs room to grow. You can take the stakes off as soon as the tree is stable enough and is able to withstand any weather. As a next step you should mulch the earth around the tree. If there is wildlife able to access your yard, build a fence around tree. Some animals really like to eat the bark of young trees.
If your tree is healthy and growing well it will have its first fruits after three to five years. Pick some of the fruit if your tree carries too many. It is possible that the branches break off if the fruits get too thick and heavy. Do not worry if in some years your tree does not carry any fruits or only few. Fruit trees periodically need years of recreation. In these years they produce only little or no fruit at all.
It is possible that you will have problems with some kind of pest. In order to avoid pests and to hold back bugs from your tree, you should pick old leaves and brush.
A tree will stay healthy if you are pruning its branches in the months of winter and spring. During dry times you should water the tree every two weeks. Furthermore, beware of not hitting the tree with your lawn mower or a weed eater. This can disturb the process of growing. If you are keeping these advices in your mind and if your tree gets enough water and sun, you will have much fun with your new healthy fruit tree.
