Getting the level of watering correct is important if you are to maintain healthy plants and the overall look of your garden.

As the videos in my previous posts have been so popular, I’m including another, this time explaining how to properly water your plants.

Getting it right is a tricky balancing act, but if you follow the simple instructions in the video then you shouldn’t have any trouble getting your watering right!

Step 1: Determine Saturation
Determine the amount of wetness your plants need according to their type. For instance, grass needs more water than a cactus. Certain flowers may need different amounts than, say, tomato plants. Indoor plants, safe from outdoor elements don’t need as much water to survive. It’s all about what kind of plants you have and where you have them.

Step 2: Timing Is Everything
For outdoor plants, wait until evening or early morning to water your garden so that the sun doesn’t evaporate the moisture too quickly. Also, watering under a hot sun can scorch your grass and garden. Water indoor plants as needed. Most only need water on a weekly basis. Don’t wait until the soil is completely dry, but be sure not to over saturate either.

Step 3: Install Rain Gauges
In order to keep track of how much water your outdoor plants are getting each week, install a rain gauge, checking the amount of water after each shower, and supplementing the difference yourself each week.

Step 4: Adjust The Amounts
Young plants may need less water more frequently while mature plants may need more water on fewer occasions in order to thrive.

Step 5: Test Your Soil
For potted plants, place your finger in the soil to see how dry it is, or try thumping the pot. A dull thump should indicate sufficiently moist soil, while a sharp knock indicates dryer soil that has shrunk away from the edges of the pot.

Step 6: Drench And Drain
Make sure enough water goes into the pot to drain out of the bottom, moisturizing the roots. If there is a tray beneath, don’t allow the plant to sit in the water. Drench, drain, and don’t drown.
